Beauty Queens by Libba Bray

I really loved this book! I thought the feminist message was wonderful even if it was very obvious what the author was conveying (no hidden meanings here, everything was out in the open). The book was interesting, funny, action packed, and had some self-reflective chapters. I thought the idea of teenage pageant girls being stranded on an island was fantastic! It was reminiscent of Lord of the Flies, but with girls, pageants, “sexy” boy pirates, and a villainous corporation. The plot was ridiculous, and all over the place (in a fun way). It was very character driven, which I liked. I thought it was great that there were diverse characters, and the character sheets in the book were helpful in further understanding the girls (and differentiating them at first). My favorite characters were: Petra, Nicole, and Taylor.
