 Mostly sad, but makes a surprisingly good short story on it's own. Though a lot of the impact would be lost if you haven't already read Thorn (or at least, gone on to read it after), unlike a lot of prequel stories it feels like you got a whole tiny story arc.

Recommended mostly for those who enjoyed Thorn, but perhaps also for those who are on the fence about reading Thorn, as it gives you good idea of the feel of the longer story.
