Smonk by Tom Franklin

Bizarre, fascinating, funny, and at its best when following the individual threads of our leads and those pursuing them. At its worst, parts of the finale felt like a parlor room scene due to lengthy exposition, but I'm not even sure if the start or end points of our characters matter all that much with a title like "Smonk, or, Widow town : being the scabrous adventures of E.O. Smonk & of the whore Evavangeline in Clarke County, Alabama, early in the last century."
