De chirurg, by Tess Gerritsen

2.0

I'm conflicted about this book. I really wanted to know how it ended, but it annoyed me incredibly. I had to look up so many times when this book was written (2001, for your information), because it seemed to date from either 1950 or 1901. All the women seem to be angry and all the men immediately fall in love with the prettiest lady. Luckily, the female characters gain some depth later in the book, but it took way too long.

And then there is the part where I thought this book was written in 1901. At some point a black man enters the stage and she continually talks about the 'nigger'. Come on! Who still uses that word?! In 2001?! This is ridiculous. It isn't like it is said by one of the more racist characters in the book, it is used as a description. Please tell me this was only in there because I read a translation.

So, there it is. A misogynistic book with the word nigger in it, with a very exciting plot I really wanted to know. What the hell kind of rating do you give that?!
