Mom & Me & Mom by Maya Angelou
4.0
I decided to watch a documentary about Maya Angelou before listening to this wonderful audiobook, read by the author. It helped put this book into better context, but even without it, it is a wonderful memoir. Maya Angelou started out with so little and became a giant in the world of literature and as a black woman achieving success in such a wide variety of interests.
As we listen to Maya tell the story of her life, with an emphasis on her relationship with her mother, we can see so clearly the influence of Vivian Baxter on her daughter. They both achieved much and helped break down barriers for other women to follow. Maya was clear about her early pain in the relationship and how Vivian fell short as the mother of young children, while being a soulmate and significant influence in her teen and young adult years in particular. I love the independence and willingness to take chances that Vivian gave Maya with expectation and example.
