Old Filth by Jane Gardam

5.0

What a great read. Old Filth (standing for Failed in London, Try Hong Kong) is the nickname of respected lawyer and judge, Sir Edward Feathers. As the novel progresses layers of his personality are revealed as we also travel through his life story. We jump from childhood to the present and all points in between but the author handles the shifts in time so well that I never felt lost. There are touches of humour, for Filth is certainly an interesting character, but also great pathos as the life experiences our hero has gone through have clearly had a huge impact on his personality. He is the embodiment of the ‘stiff upper lip’. Looking forward to reading the other two books in the series.
