The Dreamer by E.J. Mellow
5.0
I received this book in a giveaway, thanks to the wonderful author. This book actually surprised me with how much I enjoyed it! It's not typically what I'm used to reading, and I dunno I ended up really loving it.
The story is about a young woman, Molly, in her early twenties. She has a really good life: great job, great friends, and a very sweet and loyal man. But then, on her birthday, she's struck by lightning. And because of that, she dreams every night into a very mysterious, intricate other world. At first, she's confused and doesn't think this world is real. She thinks she's going crazy, but alas! The dream world is real, and Molly is a much bigger part of it than she could ever realize.
What I loved about this book was the creativity. I'm pretty sure I have never read a book where the character dreams and enters another world. The author creates weapons, a society, people, demons, all within her main characters mind. And the way that it ties into the real world (I won't say because of spoilers) is probably super cool. It makes me wish this was real, and in real life...and I could somehow find myself in Terra one day...
I also pretty much love all the characters; Molly herself is such a great voice to read from. She's funny, smart, sarcastic and totally kick-ass. She's so strong and I love strong females. Other strong females are Becca, Molly's loyal and caring best friend, and also Aveline. She's a bit cold, kind of gives me an Isabelle Lightwood vibe, and I hope I'm not disappointed by her by the end of the series. She's totally BA. As for the boys, we have two extremely dreamy (no pun intended) men. There IS a love triangle in the story, and yes, I am torn. Jared, her real life boyfriend, is the most loyal, adorable, sexy character i've met and I really want Molly to be with him. But there's also Dev, the EXTREMELY mysterious, hot, daunting man who appears in the dream world Terra. I thought that maybe Dev knew Molly before and she just forgot about him, but apparently they did know each other and to me their relationship IS a little insta-lovey. So I hope maybe they don't end up together just yet, I like it when relationships are drawn out.
I can't wait to see how the rest of the story unfolds, and how important Molly actually is in trying to save Terra. Will she be able to keep her awake life normal, her friends, her family, her boyfriend..? Or will the dream world take over her life completely and things will go wrong? I have the Divide on hand and I can't wait to get to it!
