Sex, Jesus, and the Conversations the Church Forgot by Mo Isom

1.0

I was really hoping for a book that opened a new door to productive conversations on the topic of sex, one area that the Church has quite successfully failed in. And while I respect the author’s story and what it took to write this book, most of what I heard followed the same traditional “sex is bad except in marriage and then it’s absolutely fine, encouraged even.”

While even Mo Isom acknowledges that type of thinking and a few of the other pitfalls of Christian teachings the Church has pushed regarding sex and even purity culture are toxic, the only advice given is along the lines of “just pray about it.” That’s only a piece of the puzzle and especially unhelpful for those who’ve endured trauma in this area.

The best way I can describe this book (as with a lot of others in this same genre) is that it uses spiritual bypassing to excuse so much else under the surface. The topic of sex within Christianity extends further than simply, “you sexually sinned and are a horrible person for that, but there’s redemption so turn away before you go to far.” Unfortunately, this book ended there and for that reason I just couldn’t get into it.
