Apartment 16 by Adam L.G. Nevill
4.0
Through his observations and vivid prose, Adam Nevill generally has a knack for capturing the griminess of everyday British life throughout his novels and characters. For me, this enhances the immersion of his stories greatly. In Apartment 16, his unique, caricatured depictions of London and it's denizens take centre stage alongside the excellent premise of a cosmic horror revolving around 'cursed' art.
One of the characters is 'gifted' a very surreal way of seeing the world, and these segments were incredibly interesting to me, accentuating the already grim depictions of London which such vivid prose that I felt like I was having a mild hallucination myself reading them, such was my immersion. Although the story had a very slow start, possibly due to his incredibly descriptive prose, Nevill more than makes up for it towards the excellent conclusion.
