This is a straightforward gothic ghost story. It is literary in nature and pays homage to Jane Eyre, Turn of the Screw, and Dickens.  The literary references are fun and cheeky, adding to the reader’s enjoyment.  The plot moves along at a good clip, the characters are interesting and believable, and the ending is well done. I was surprised that the protagonist constantly talks about being satisfied to be on her own, yet imagines a romantic relationship with every single man she meets. It was distracting and she never quite coalesced for me as a  Jane Eyre like character because of this. I did appreciate some of the references being turned on their head and I laughed out loud at the clerk’s name and his nature.
The ghosts are eerie and some moments gave me real shivers. The ending is well executed.   I would have enjoyed a twist or turn along the way, but this was a perfect spooky read for winter.
