DNF at 50%

Received an Advanced Reader’s Copy from the publisher, Avon, via Edelweiss+ in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!

Loathe at First Sight is the first book that I DNFed since I started blogging. I just never had the heart to DNF a book and I have always wanted to stay until the very end because I believe in giving everything and everyone a chance.

But for the first time I felt, giving this book a chance right now might come at the cost of my own emotional health and I wasn’t ready for that right now. I think the book starts off with a setback because it’s marketed wrong. I walked into this book thinking it was a fluffy, rom-com, enemies-to-lovers office romance. It was not.

Loathe at First Sight should have come with trigger warnings. I DNFed at 50% and everything I’d read includes
Spoiler misogyny, racism, sexism, work place harassment, fat-phobia, cyber bullying and toxicity.
While all of this--where a young woman has to face difficult hurdles and obstacles just because of her race and her gender--are very relevant topics and are important to address and talk about, I wasn’t prepared for it. I hadn’t walked in aware of what I was going to read and I certainly hadn’t expected it to be written in a way that was bothering me so much I hadn’t realised I was not doing okay until I texted a friend and ranted about something that happened to me in the past with so much angst. It came out of absolutely no where and I realised that the toxic environment in the book was bringing back some difficult memories.

Walk into this book with awareness and while being in the right mind space for it and you’d probably enjoy it a lot more than me.

Stay safe and happy reading to all of you. <3
