Beloved by Toni Morrison

5.0

This book was truly haunting in a way I haven’t seen in a book for a bit. The trauma from slavery and related violence, the trauma from abandonment and emotional neglect, the whole story behind the death of Sethe’s child. All of it was deeply heartbreaking.

Toni Morrison has such a profound way of writing the impact of memory and trauma. I’ve never seen any other writing as incredible as this when it comes to weaving memory, trauma, past, and present all together.

The supernatural elements of this made it even more haunting, and the whole story surrounding the deceased child is terrible and heartbreaking. The way Morrison wrote it and fleshed out the impact that this has on not only the mother of a child but onto the other children in the family was remarkable.

Everyone should read this.
