The Shining by Stephen King
4.75
This was my first Stephen King. I’m a whimp so I wanted to start with one that has a story I already knew the main points of from the movie. This was so good. I loved the eeriness of it, getting Danny’s POV made a huge difference for the book v the movie in my eyes.
There are parts that were scary and so impactful (the topiary!!). I enjoyed that Jack felt like he was barely hanging onto his sanity to start, and the way he wrote the role of the house driving him crazy was really cool.
There are fair criticisms of some moments where you can tell this was written by a man in the 70s with some of the language, but its not hard to get beyond that, and it doesn’t turn me off from a book as a whole when its just in parts and, in ways, adds to the characters.
