There’s at least two ways to read this book: one as Tolstoy’s manifesto on the rights of women and the other as a detailed account of the misogyny in Tolstoy’s time that honestly proves itself wrong with the amount of goriness. The first track makes this book sick and intolerable. The latter opens up an interesting and enjoyable dialogue on Tolstoy’s (and millions of other’s) extremist values through and account of unjustified male pettiness, power, and jealousy.
