What Happened to the Bennetts by Lisa Scottoline

2.0

I had enjoyed Eternal and was hoping for better from this author. Now I'm not so sure about reading any of her other books. 2* - I feel like I am being generous because most of the book was awful, but the beginning was interesting.

I had high hopes for this book in the beginning. The story starts out strong. However, the story goes down hill fast when the family enters the witness protection program. The characters drove me crazy. The family is so social media obsessed that they cannot stay off even when their lives depend on it. The police protection knows this, but gives them a bunch of laptops and cell phones without any sort of blocks or surveillance in any way. Then this average Joe dad, who doesn't appear very assertive to begin with, is supposed to put himself in harms way to solve what an entire force of police and under cover detectives cannot. This as well as other interactions seemed far fetched, especially the truckers to the rescue and that's coming from the daughter of a trucking company owner.

Also, what is it with product placement in books lately? I'm getting really sick of items being hocked in books. I hope this doesn't become a bigger thing. It's very distracting. This book wasn't nearly as bad a some previous books, but I'm not a fan of this new advertising technique.
