3.5

I have such mixed feelings about this one.

Firstly, I just want to get it out of the way and say that I don't think I'm down for Violet and Xaden being endgame anymore just because of how Violet acts around him. The entire first half of this book was to do with her trust issues and, yeah, I get where she's coming from where she'd like him to reveal more that he knows, BUT he's also keeping most of the secrets he does literally just to protect her. AND she knEW what she was getting into when she got with him so the fact that they were basically arguing the entire time they were together got old pretty fast.

Secondly, I really enjoyed Varrish as a villain character for the first half of the book; I love it when I get to root against someone who's just a complete nutjob and he had some great scenes! I did think that bringing back one certain villainous character wasn't really necessary and I'm not excited for their involvement in the next book, but we move.

I loved the new characters that were introduced, along with someone from Xaden's past adding a little bit of life into the insta-love that we got from their relationship. I enjoyed the banter from existing characters and getting more information into the different areas of Basgiath as well as beyond that. I really think that the world building and politics in this were simple to understand and so I obviously gobbled it up.

The dragons in this were amazing as per ush, with Tairn and Andarna's banter being genuinely funny and Tairn just being the best character in the book, honestly. I think my main gripes with this were Violet herself, her relationship with Xaden and the fact that hundreds of pages were dedicated to this.

I'm actually really surprised that I was into this as much as I was, and I'm looking forward to reading the next one. 👍
