The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

4.0

I feel like I’m being slightly generous with 4 stars for this one; maybe it’s the fact that it’s a classic and I’m meant to like it? Either way, I didn’t really love this. Perhaps I would have appreciated this more when I was younger but as CS Lewis once said ‘a children’s story that can only be enjoyed by children isn’t a good children’s story in the slightest’.

However. I’m probably being too negative. This was definitely good. I think it’s just that, because it’s constantly described as a ‘timeless classic’ etc, maybe I was expecting more.

The story had good morals but I just felt as though it felt a bit too didactic and holier-than-thou? One section I did really like though, was the bit where the little prince visited all the different planets and encountered all different men with different flaws (eg, those obsessed with power, wealth or vanity).

Overall, as a short little parable, it was good. But to be considered an all-time classic? I’m not quite convinced. I probably wouldn’t recommend to anyone over 12.
