The Twisted Ones by T. Kingfisher

dark tense slow-paced

2.0

This was a bust for me. 🤷‍♀️

The idea of the book was intriguing, but I struggled to get past the way it was written. I know it was a stylistic choice based on the folklore & found manuscript, but it slowed the whole story down. I kept getting stuck on the fact that Mouse is a freelance editor. Even with the whole rambling "disclaimer," she writes into that first chapter, I couldn't help but think that she never would've written like this, even thinking it would never see the light of day... and I know, I know, that's a design choice to make this feel more urgent and creepy and found and all that - but it just did not work for me.

Writing style aside, the core of the book is fascinating. The effigy descriptions were insane and incredibly scary when you let it all sink in. It's honestly what kept me reading. I wanted to know more about them and how they came to be.

The ending was... like a disappointing fireworks display. I kept thinking, "That's it?"

I guess I was just looking for more from this book. More unease, more creepy, more cliffhanger... maybe I went into this with expectations at an unreasonable height. Hell, I almost DNF. But in the end, I read it through and think it's a 2-star read... interesting topic with some really good creepy moments, but overall, it is not the full package for me.
