Until Thy Wrath be Past by Åsa Larsson

3.0

Larsson is skillful writer and I enjoyed being "transported" to Northern Sweden for this book. I picked this up without reading any of her previous works, so some of the back and forth between the characters carried over from previous books was perhaps lost on me, but it didn't make it any less enjoyable to read.

I liked the jumps from character to character and from past to present. It kept it interesting and the pacing was spot on. I also appreciated the symbolism of the birds throughout.

However, the book fell short for me at the end: the author just didn't tie up the loose ends enough to satisfy my curiosity. As this seems to be a series, perhaps they might be in the next book, but I doubt it. The questions I had were regarding the mystery that was solved, and typically in series like these the next book will move on to another mystery while keeping the same crime solvers.

Spoiler
The pieces I feel the author should have touched on more are the actual contents of the plane and Simon's body. I get that the plane contents don't technically matter - it was just the paranoia Kerttu had that it might contain something about her crimes - but it's still not very satisfying that it's never revealed. Also, what does happen to Simon? How come Wilma's spirit is just fine to leave, knowing Simon's body is still there? It was just kind of a fast ending and knowing these two items would help tie it up more. It made me feel like Wilma and Simon died for nothing at the end.
