A People's Future of the United States: Speculative Fiction from 25 Extraordinary Writers by John Joseph Adams, Victor LaValle

sad tense fast-paced

3.0

Of course not every story in an anthology will speak to everyone, but I struggled with most of the stories in this collection. While it makes sense given the time of writing and publishing, most of the stories were simple expressions of anxiety and fear without nuance. When hope was to be found it was often because the oppressor magically disappeared and the persecuted were able to build idealized communities.

But there were definitely bright spots as well. As always Cat Valente's scathing satire had me cackling endlessly.
