The reserved and simple prose, the splitting of every infinitive, the rich and bitter aftertaste that keeps asking "have we made a huge mistake?" This was a brisk kid sister to Never Let Me Go.

Read again in 2024, more depth to explore, more reality to contend with, more echoes of children’s books like Corduroy and The Giving Tree, which in turn complicate and increase the stakes exponentially.
