The Killing Season by Mason Cross

2.0

The Killing Season was high on a newspaper list of the best thrillers and detective novels of the year. It also has pretty good reviews on Amazon. So I thought it would be a good read. However, I was disappointed.
It has all the right ingredients for a good thriller – a crazy killer, a mysterious lone wolf hero, a nationwide manhunt etc. But I never got that feeling of “I can’t put this down, I have to keep reading” that I get with some thrillers. To be fair, I thought that the action scenes were well done and exciting. But I didn’t care much for the protagonists, and overall I never got hooked on the story.
This book reminded me a lot of the Jack Reacher books by Lee Child, which I think are much better than this one. In particular it has many of the same elements as Without Fail, which I would recommend instead of The Killing Season.
