Allies by Dana Alison Levy, Shakirah Bourne

5.0

This is both a great book and a great resource. I went into Allies with a complete misunderstanding of what it was about (which is 100% my own fault for not bothering to read the description). I had expected to read stories centered around antiracism and being an ally to Black people in particular, so I was completely thrown for a loop when I discovered this book tackles all kinds of allies - some of which I had never considered before. The chapter on intersex individuals and people with seizures were both particularly eye opening as I had never given much thought to either before.

I think my favorite thing about this collection of essays was the variety. Not just in the topics discussed, but in the choice of authors discussing those topics - some were sharing moments in their life when they needed an ally, some where sharing times when they acted as an ally, some shared mistakes they had made, and some talked about how being an ally sometimes means sitting down instead of standing up. I *loved* that variety. I never knew what to expect from each essay.
