Empire Falls by Richard Russo

2.0

I was attracted to this book with the setting in Maine & the Pulitzer Prize 'tag'. I give it a mere 2 1/2 stars, because the heart of the book, for me, didn't happen until the last 100 pages or so. The characters were real enough. Mr. Russo gave them all a draping in melancholy that was hard to take throughout the book. I was brought down by the perpetual sadness that took over, with each character's self examination or introspection of their lives or the lives of others in the book. In the last quarter of this read, all of a sudden there is action, drama, and life changing events. Every day life can be tedious at times. Empire Falls proves it.
