Still Talking by Joan Rivers

dark emotional inspiring fast-paced

3.0

I wasn't sure what to make of this book. I think I expected something funnier, but this is a wry telling of her career path, which was dominated by men and male egos. It has some dry humour but it wasn't the laugh-a-minute Joan Rivers I expected. More fool me, this book is actually deep! It features some pretty raw emotion and gave me some insight into the struggles of making it into and remaining in the "in crowd." I don't know if Joan really intended to highlight how male dominated the industry was (is?), she certainly didn't phrase it as a complaint, but it really stood out to me that just to be considered alongside male comics, she had to be everything they were and more. I'm a stingy reviewer, so three stars indicates I didn't waste my time, just "liked" it instead of loving it. I'll always love Joan Rivers though. Rest in peace, you star.
