As Meat Loves Salt by Maria McCann

i'll likely be feeling the effects of this one for a while. it was surprisingly intense and harrowing, enough that the bright spots of the central romance appear dim in comparison. our main character jacob carries a literal devil on his shoulder (i read this as paranoid schizophrenia coupled with anger issues) and so seeing the world through his eyes exclusively can become a bit taxing. the writing is excellently stylized if a little weighty at times, especially in the stretch spent in London. i appreciate the sheer amount of research that must have gone into this; i felt truly immersed in the world. the characters are beautifully rendered and their detail makes their suffering all the more painful to witness.
