Kinda cute, but.
These american characters have a weird relationship with money. Why would someone who had been RUN OVER by a wealthy person refuse anything but the very basic monetary compensation, he didn't event want the money for his lost wages despite desperately needing it
it's almost fetishistic and completely illogical

also, why would you care so much to keep a job as a BIKE COURIER

also, the bike courier guy had some sort of traumatic family background that felt simultaneously overdone and underdeveloped, in the 2010' "trauma is hot" way
(and don't get me wrong, I love the "fun trauma worlds" such as the foxhole court series but here it felt out of place as it wasn't high action at all)
