I felt like it was definitely important to highlight how toxic the gaming industry is towards women but I struggled so much to get through this book because of how focused the story was in all the cringe moments in the workplace and not enough on the MCs. It felt more central than her at times. It took up so much of the book (at least up to where I read) and it was unbearable mainly because no other part outside of that was interesting enough for me.
I am exhausted every day by white men. I don’t need this in my books too - at least not with how much they are centered here. I care about the MC and the space she wants to take up but I’m not getting any room here to see that. It’s not being explored at all. Maybe it’s a reflection of how women of colour can be disempowered in these spaces but I still don’t like how even with this, the author is not helping us see how she is building up her defenses so she can stand up for herself in these oppressive spaces. Instead what we get is that every day, the dudebros at her work keep getting more misogynistic and racist which is certainly believable. But it feels more like it should be the backdrop to how the MC pulls through all that to make her idea a success. If the book gets to explore this later, though, I don’t have it in me to try find out.
Not feeling the chemistry with Nolan as well so it became an additional challenge. They were so bland together.
I had high hopes for this one.
