I really did not know what to expect from this book and I’m presently surprised and kind of disappointed.
First the positives. The imagery works wonders in creating an over all creepy vibe. It’s not scary as much as it is unsettling and combined with the 90s setting and anxieties the book does well in making you feel like something is wrong without having a clear answer why.
As for the negatives, and this might be nit-picky, but the book’s story description and what the story actually was might make you thing your going to get something different. I thought the events of the story would be taking place after the life changing incident of the book but it actually takes place beforehand. We don’t actually spend a lot of time in the after, so don’t expect a kid on the run kind of story. It is still a good story but kind of feels like false advertising. The ending also felt weird but maybe I’m just missing the metaphor.
Regardless, defiantly give this one a read if your interested in creepy aesthetics and great writing.
