Beautyland by Marie-Helene Bertino

5.0

This book destroyed me and is a new all-time favorite. The concept of an "alien" reporting back about human life is so simple in theory, but the way that Marie-Helene Bertino writes about the complexities of life, and all of the nuances that come with it, is so beautiful. From waving hello to someone to drinking wine to finding hobbies to owning a dog to grief - everything about this book feels both personal and universal.

I also really love the way that Bertinto wrote about pop culture being such an important part of the human experience. As someone who loves Cheers and also considers The Good Place one of my favorite shows of all time (and cries at the series finale every time I watch it), I have never felt more seen.

I think everyone feels like an alien at times, and this book captured that feeling perfectly. I'm going to be thinking about this one for a long time.
