Bruja Born by Zoraida Córdova

3.0

I read this book in one sitting and really liked it. In the previous book (Labyrinth Lost) Lula already grew on me a lot, so I of course bought the book in which she's the main character.

Spoilers!!

In Bruja Born, Lula is dealing with the trauma of being sucked into Hell, or at least something akin to it. After she gets into an accident and loses all of her classmates and her boyfriend, Maks, she desperately tries to get her boyfriend back. I have read some critique over Lula's reaction and her decisions throughout the book, but I thought it was quite relatable, also considering what she reveals about her selfworth struggles (basing her worth on her appearance) and the trauma she suffered.

Things really get out of hand when Lula accidentally creates an army of undead who start a killing spree in Brooklyn. Happens to the best of us. The ending was a bit rushed in my opinion, with the punishment Lady de la Muerta envokes on Lula and her family and the quite sudden romantical tension between Lula and Rhett, who she talked to, like, two times.

Overall enjoyable, 3,5/5 stars!
