Story of O by Pauline Réage

5.0

The questions about whether the pseudonymous writer is male or female are simply ridiculous. It is just obvious.

The introduction by Jean Paulhan is the most tedious and sexist. I wanted to reanimate him so that I could punch him. His clubbiness insider critique makes me want to vom.

Now wikipedia says the author was his lover, and he challenged her that no woman is capable of writing an erotic novel. She proved him wrong, she really did. She should have left him on the spot.

It's really everything one could want. Descriptive, evocative, and yet leaves plenty of room to fill in the blanks yourself.

The pedophelia aspect - I wish it weren't there. But in the spirit of Sade himself, the book descends to the lowest common denominator.
