The Elephant Whisperer by Lawrence Anthony

4.0

This was a page turner early on. Lawrence Anthony made you feel involved in all his efforts to save a rogue herd of elephants, and later, his winning their trust.
There were so many incidents that had my heart in my throat - some of which had happy endings and some not.
I learned about how elephants communicate through the rumblings of their stomachs, the look in their eye (the one facing you), and their somewhat telepathic abilities. They reportedly showed up at the house after Anthony died and stayed for two days, much as they would for another elephant who had died.
There were light moments too. Apparently the Zulu people have gallows humor and tease each other. According to Anthony they are great "raconteurs," elaborating their stories of poachers, and sightings of big cats. But it sounds like they were fiercely loyal to the goals at Thula Thula reserve to protect the elephants.
I loved Francoise, his wife and the way the made fun of her French accent.
A thoroughly enjoyable book!
