As hauntingly bleak as this was, it was also surprisingly compassionate in its portrayal of humanity, in a way I really appreciated - I think I'm bored with "dog-eat-dog" apocalypse stories.
The way the main character believes herself to be a kind of blank slate set apart from her companions (it's arguable whether this is really true) makes for a compelling voice. This is a vividly devastating little parable that's going to stay in the back of my mind for a long time.
