Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

3.0

I would give this 3.5 starts if allowed. The writing itself is largely well-crafted and vivid. It was an interesting take on the standard gothic novel, and many parts were effectively unsettling and creepy. 3.5 stars because I found the pacing was a inconsistent - I know suspense is a big part of gothic fiction but this felt like it took too long to get going. I also felt the mysteries sometimes bordered on 'confusing' rather than 'mysterious'. The way the conflicts are resolved felt a little bit out of the blue, and some elements which I thought would be involved in the resolution weren't sufficiently explained. I also ended the novel largely ambivalent about most of the characters - both protagonists and antagonists. So, a fair read, but definitely not top quality.
