Binti by Nnedi Okorafor

5.0

5 out of 5 stars!

Now, first off I have to say that this is my first science fiction novel of any length, so with that said...

Nnedi Okorafor's writing is what drew me into this novella from the preview that I read.
For sci-fi (and me being a newbie to the genre) this was a very easy read.

The set up for the story of how the main character Binti left her home to travel to attend Oomza University, "the finest institution of higher learning in the galaxy" was very nice.
Nnedi Okorafor connected us with Binti and was able to make me care about what happened to her in a short amount of pages.

No spoilers here so I'll just say that the ish hit the fan for Binti around page 24 and it did not let up until closer to the end of the novella.

Based off the synopsis I had no idea that this would be such an intense, suspenseful ride.
This is just what I was looking for in a sci-fi novella.

Binti is a story about survival, it has horror elements with the alien race (the Meduse), it has heart, it's about pride in one's heritage, and includes lessons in valuing land and animals.

I loved this book! I could not put it down and flew through it in a few hours.

I will definitely be reading more from Nnedi Okorafor and already have Binti 2 lined up to read next month.
