Barons of the Sea: And Their Race to Build the World's Fastest Clipper Ship by Steven Ujifusa

4.0

After a couple of excellent, lively chapters about the China Trade, it veers off to become more about the evolution of the clipper ships. (Fair enough, it’s what it’s supposed to be about - but my main interest is in the China content.) Still interesting and well-written (if a little strange at times - for example, a very strange explanation of what tea is), and includes some very useful tidbits about the China trade towards its end. Engaging and detailed portraits of many of the most important people involved - from the traders, captains, financiers, and more. Personally, I found the Delano content to be the strongest.

Definitely worth a read by anyone interested in this period of history and naval history.
