Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China by Jung Chang

4.0

This is both an indepth history book about China in the 20th Century, and a stunning memoir of a family spanning three generations. From traditional China of Warlords and concubines, through Mao, and out the other side into the modern world. Chang combines the history of a whole coutry with the intimate story of her mother and grandmother to create a wonderful book.
I can't imagine the terror of living in Mao's China. No matter how much you follow the rules, you could be denounced by someone and end up tortured, ruined, or dead. Some of the rules seem laughable, like not being able to throw away a newspaper because it has Mao's portrait on it, but of course it's nothing to joke about when your life is in danger if you do it accidentely.
