Death's Bloom by Lily Mayne

5.0

Phenomenal

Some writer in the recent past said "where originality is impossible, aim for authenticity", or something like that. So little can be original these days, so telling a story that is authentic should be the goal instead.
Yet here, Lily Mayne takes inspiration from an old tale and somehow manages to do the impossible: make something super original. The choices characters make might be the choices Mayne's demographic would choose, but they're not the choices we're told the hero of any story should make. Lily Mayne is one of my favourite authors. Her stories have me on the edge of my seat, and very little surprises me in books, but Lily always finds a way to do it.
