Mortal Gods by Kendare Blake

4.0

4 out of 5 stars

It has been a long time since I read the first installment of this series and during that time I have read The Iliad. Although you can read the series without knowing too much about Greek mythology, I felt like I got a lot more out of the story because I knew the back stories of the characters more thoroughly.

I enjoyed the action and the relationships between the characters the most, which I feel was thanks to Blake's excellent writing style. It is just easy to read and flows nicely. I really appreciated how each of the gods' deaths were symbolic, for example.

The big thing that bumped down the rating for me was Cassandra and Athena. I don't really know the reason why they hate each other (besides the fact that Cassandra is a god killer). Their petty disagreements got on my nerves because they could have been avoided.

The ending was kind of a cliffhanger, so I am looking forward to reading the next installment.
