Nice Dragons Finish Last by Rachel Aaron

3.0

Absolutely loved the concept and world (magic! dragons! dragon clan politics! killer ghost cat! spirits! high tech cities!) but the execution left me a little disappointed. If you’re looking for a light hearted and low stakes YA fantasy and are a fan of nice but bullied boys with immense power sealed in them à la Naruto or Luffy style then this might be a great read for you.

The action really picks up around the 40% mark, the plot is entertaining but because it’s low stakes I never felt truly invested. Our main characters are conceptually cool (a strong female mage, an attractive and very sweet baby dragon who underestimates his power) but I found them to be quite bland whereas the side characters are way more entertaining and interesting. Give me a book about Bob, Ian, or Chelsie and I’d read it. The writing is very simple and often suffers from stating the obvious or repeatedly stating the same thing a different way. There’s also a few mistakes and inconsistencies here and there that took me out of the story. Ultimately a fun and quick read that just had a lot of elements I personally don’t normally gravitate towards.
