The tone is very High School Drama. Definitely a focus on the flaws.

Odette strives to attend Spellcasters Spy Academy since she was young, but has put no effort into pursuing this dream even with her parents trying to stop her. At least a little effort would of been nice, since it is her dream, even if teenagers don't always exactly think about such things. It is a story, we have the ability to suspend a bit of reality. At least physical training since she wasn't able to practice her magic.

Enjoyable friendship, the characters were superficial but it was nice to have all the connections and interpersonal relationships. That was done well. It's a shame about the insta-love 'mate connection' sort of skewed that building of a friend group, which could of been cute, but with the shortness of the first book it can be excused a little bit.
