Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

3.0

Quick read for me. The plot twist at the end did surprise me. During trial they totally made it sound like there was no way it could’ve been Kya (and I still don’t really get how she did it..) My favorite part was Jodie and Kya’s reunion— when Kya gets her mother’s paintings and we all find out what happened to Ma after she left (heartbreaking!).

But I didn’t like all the sentence fragments. I’m not a huge fan of lengthy descriptions of nature. I wish we had gotten to read more about how/why Kya murdered Chase and how she felt about her actions afterwards—they did such a good job proving her “innocence” that I felt almost betrayed in the end bc it was so out of character for her. And I have questions: where was Chase’s wife Pearl during this whole thing!? And why did Chase have an accent but Tate didn’t? If Kya did take the bus back in the middle of the night then how come the bus drivers didnt see her? What was the moral of the story? (The townspeople were supposedly so mean and judgmental for accusing Marsh Girl of murder……. But they were right…..) And also Im sorry but I just cant keep stop thinking about how dirty and gross Kya must be from lack of hygiene… did she brush her teeth?

Oh and I did like the firefly symbolism at the end.
