City of Refuge by Tom Piazza
3.0
3.5. The beginning and ending were rough, but the middle (when Hurricane Katrina arrives) kept me hungry for more. It ended up being a good choice as prep for my first New Orleans visit; this book worships the city, its people, and its culture. I just wasn’t at all attached to the characters. But I do hAve new understanding of some NOLA residents’ choices not to evacuate and a much deeper appreciation for what actually happened to people who stayed and those who evacuated.
