Ok, so this is extreme horror, so when I say this book was gross and unsettling and made me cover my mouth and audibly say "oh no" when I realised what was coming .. I mean that as a compliment. Surprisingly well written.
Full breakdown under spoilers:
After reading a book where I had no clue what was going on, in the unreliable narrator / descent into madness kind of way, and no idea how I was supposed to feel ... I needed to read something that was the complete opposite. Enter visceral body horror. Definitely knew what was going on (gross stuff) and definitely knew how I was supposed to feel (horrified).
Characters: 6/10
Considering the book is mainly two characters talking to eachother, there was lots of room for characterisation and I felt it was done well.
Atmosphere: 8/10
Everything was viscerally rendered. I could imagine each disgusting thing.
Writing style: 8/10
Surprisingly well written, considering the niche genre.
Plot: 6/10
Absolutely wild plot and I have no idea how to rate it.
Intrigue: 9/10
It read as one of those books that you just had to keep reading to find out what on earth was going to happen.
Logic: 4/10
While everything was highly deranged and not logical, there was a sort of horrendous fateful intertwining of the stories that was in some way inevitable.
Entertainment: 6/10
It was a page turner that was satisfying to read in its own disgusting way. Like you might not be enjoying it but you can't look away.
Overall rating: 6.71/10
