Being my first fantasy book (well, my first high fantasy book if you consider it high fantasy), other than 'The Graveyard Book' by Neil Gaiman and 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe' by C.S. Lewis, it was an enjoyable read for me. This book was perfectly fine, falling in the middle between excellent from beginning to end and being truly awful.
It is the concept of the book that makes this book decent/perfectly fine instead of, for lack of a better word, meh. Reading about diverse characters standing up against patriarchy in a dystopian take on the classic Cinderella story was fascinating and refreshing for me. I also liked the fact that neither the romance nor the plot overshadow each other in this book. This book was well-balanced and well-executed, both in terms of the romance aspect and the actual plot.
The only things I wasn't necessarily fond of about this book were how drawn out the beginning was, how little action was in the middle, and how rushed the ending was.
Overall, this book was an easy read for my first fantasy book. Despite not being a book I'm likely to remember, I enjoyed reading it just the same and wouldn't hesitate to read another Kalynn Bayron book in the future.
