Mary Anne Saves the Day by Raina Telgemeier

5.0

I really like how fun this book is. I love the idea of a baby sitter's club, but I do have one critiscism.
Every time Mary Anne stands up for herself, she's always like, "Oh no! I was too mean!"
Like, girl!! No!! You!! Weren't!!
Especially in the beginning-- like come on girl!! You weren't in the wrong!
But, then again, that does sound like a thought twelve year old me would have? It even sounds like a thought I would have today, to be honest, because I'm so shy. (I'm a hypocrite q-q) I have to admit Mary Anne is my favorite character in this book, because her personality is so similar to mine, and I also love how she goes against that trope of "shy/ sensitive/ emotional character lets EVERYONE walk all over them" she doesn't do that and it's so refreshing! She stands up for herself and calls out the bull! It makes me want to read the actual series now, and makes me regret not ever picking it up (It never interested me, to be honest, and I remember seeing it during that time in my life where I hated everything "girly" I'm over that phase now, thankfully. Also, ngl, a lot of the covers of the books I saw looked hella tacky-- and I think that was the main factor on why I didn't read it x'D)
Anyway, I love how she grows within this book, and makes a new friend, and by the end of this book, the friendships the group has are stronger now. Which is just-- yes. I love books and any media that portrays good, realistic female friendships!! It's so rare! But when I find a good one, I find a good one and stick with it! I'm already rereading it.
I also love how realistically the kids act in this book, they're 12, after all, and don't act all that sensible, and while it may be confusing to me as a grown adult, I realize for a kid, because their brains aren't fully developed, and they don't have as much experience, and also don't know how to handle their emotions, that said emotions can be overwhelming sometimes. I love how this wasn't sugarcoated, and was honestly really relatable. I can't wait to read more from this series-- I might stick with the graphic novels? Not sure, but I want more!! I love Mary Anne!! Pick up this book, it's so good!
