The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman

5.0

Beautiful and haunting, this book will make you ache for the losses we encounter in life and the truths that hold us together. Set between 70-74 A.D. in Israel, it tells the story of the Jewish rebellion against Rome and the Jews at Masada who chose to take kill their families and themselves rather than be made slaves to the Romans.

The book follows 4 women whose paths have lead them to the mountain where their lives intertwine. They are brought there by love, by desperation, by the men they follow, but their strength is found and renewed in their care for each other and their love for their families. They are unlikely friends, bound together by their job -- caring for the doves -- and later by their fierce protection of each other and the men they love.

You will weep when the book ends, and you will find yourself looking for the strength of these women in yourself and your friends. It's an unforgettable story and an unforgettable book.
