The Last to Vanish, by Megan Miranda

adventurous dark mysterious tense slow-paced
Thanks for the ARC Netgalley! This thriller is released July 26th and will be a hit for fall readers.

Cutter’s Pass North Carolina is a remote town famous for its beautiful hiking - and for several disappearances over decades. Abby came to the town after the death of her mother, seeking a new community. She has been managing the inn and witnessed the local flurry amidst a journalist’s disappearance. Months later, the journalist’s brother has come to town digging up fresh evidence and questions. Abby thought she was seen as a local, but she discovers she is still an outsider and that the people she thought she knew are keeping secrets from her.

This is a slow burn thriller, layered with the various disappearances spanning decades. It’s very atmospheric- Miranda creates a vivid picture of this isolated town and trails. I was intrigued how everything would unfold and definitely was surprised by a few twists. But I don’t think it will be memorable for me due to the pace. I loved Miranda’s “All the Missing Girls” but felt “The Last House Guest” was just okay. This thriller falls in the middle of the pack for me.
