The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo

4.0

I decided to listen to the audiobook of The Poet X instead of reading a physical copy because it is written in a series of poems. I am not one to read poetry, but I really LOVED Acevedo’s novel With the Fire on High (go read it if you haven’t yet!) and wanted to continue working towards my commitment of reading diversely. Have you read any of Acevedo’s novels?

Quick Synopsis: Xiomara is a high school student growing up in Harlem with a twin brother, a crush, and a VERY strict, Catholic mother. Xiomara discovers herself and escapes her homelife through writing poems in secret. When she gets caught asking too many questions in confirmation class and kissing her crush Aman on the train, Xiomara’s mother turns her world upside down.

My opinion: Turns out, there was so much I loved about this book, including that it was written in prose! This story has so much raw emotion and several important themes immersed throughout it. The style of writing highlights these elements, creating a story that I was invested in. I loved the characters, especially how Xiomara is unapologetically herself. The audiobook creates an excellent reading experience. It is a quick listen and is read by the author. Don’t shy away from this one because it is YA or poetry. I highly recommend!
